TNC 151 CNC controller

Can anyone tell me if the TNC 151 actually DOES do cutter radius compensation on circles?

My Heidenhain book gives the code for applying compensation but when I do it it gives me an error message. ("path offset wrongly started" My CAM package (Dolphin) is perfectly capable of generating code incorporating the cutter offset to produce correct contours but it would be useful to be able to apply it at the controller to allow use of different tools without re-post processing the drawing.

Yes it will, but it isn't quite that simple (is it ever). You have to have a linear move to the start of the circle for the cutter comp to be applied along. It has to have this "lead in" to sort out the comp. I also seem to remember it matters where you approach the lead in line from as to what side the comp goes on (it's a long time since I programmed anything that way).

To be honest it is far simpler to leave the cutter comp switched off and do it in the CAM. I know that means re-posting the program if you want to take another skim off the job, but that's only a couple of minutes. If you think you might need to take another skim you could always do another couple of programs while the machine is running, each a thou or so smallerthan the last. CAM packages are usually better at applying comp than controllers are as well.

Kevin,

Are you able to post me a simple example that I can experiment with ?

Cheers,

That might be stretching my memory to breaking point , but I'll be using an interact on Saturday. I'll try and ask the owner to refresh my memory. I've done everything offline for a long time now -it's years since I had to stand at the machine and punch numbers in.
