Training courses ?

Does anyone know if local authorities still run training courses in metalworking? I did a little at school, and then a concentrated 8 week course getting my electronics degree. Since then, nothing. So, I'm pretty rusty , and haven't seen anything offered in my local area. Flower arranging, pilates etc. yes.

If the local colleges don't do this anymore, then I think that SMEE may run some training/introductory courses. Andrew Mawson would be the best person to comment on that though.

Few and far between these days (blame the legacy of Mrs T). The only one that I have heard of recently is one in Worcester but have no details.

Still one in Bedfordshire (Shefford), so not too far away. Better be quick though, the course starts tomorrow.

I'm not sure if it's a training course or a supervised workshop. I think I saw more than one course advertised last term, so it may be worth checking again in summer and autumn terms.

Thanks for that. I've just contacted them to learn that it's been taken off, pressure of space in a building being refurbished. When it runs, it sounds like a mixture of some training and people using the facilities for their hobbies. Was advised to phone again shortly before Easter to check on next term's programme. There's nothing comparable in Bucks., but at Ferrers Specialist Arts College (in E Northants) a 10 week course starts this evening "Model Engineering". Sounds as though it's similar to the one at Shefford.

Many thanks. The one at Rugby looks somewhat more serious, and should teach me workshop practice outside immediate hobby interests.

Since these courses seem rather few and far between these days, it would be useful if these and other links could be kept somewhere.

I wonder if messrs. Stevenson and Ping would be kind enough to host a page on their homeworkshop site ?

Well, I was wrong - have just spoken to the tutor. The course at Rugby is similar to the others, and is for people with projects and making use of the college's machine tools etc.

I know of a couple of colleges that run engineering workshop courses, one is in Oxford at Oxpens opposite the ice rink, the other which the apprentices go to from work is in Newbury college.

there are more advertised around the country, but nothing like the amount there was when i was apprentice at Land Rover in the Midlands in the 1970's

When i come across them i will post them on the site.

yours for now. John Burridge
