Impact Modifiers for Vinyl Siding

Jul 23, 2004 2 Replies

I saw the post about CPE, and I'm hoping someone could help address a concern about cost.

I've read that CPE is good for low temperature impact in weatherable applications, but reformulation work requires substantial effort, so I don't want to waste time/resources with CPE if my concerns are real. I understand that both PVC resin and CPE come from the same chlorine and ethylene value chain. PVC resin has already jumped >25% this year, so maybe I could expect the same for CPE?? Are my concerns wellfounded or baseless?

While CPE prices have increased, they have not increased as dramatically as PVC resin prices. Basically, the competitive market with other PVC impact modifiers keep the manufacturers from being able to push through all their feedstock increases.

I've heard that CPE prices moved up by 10% or more this year. Yeah, it's a far cry from the 25% that you attribute to PVC, but I'd be concerned if it were my formulation.
