Has anyone tried hacking this thing to make a robotics controller?

For $60.00 why bother. It probably uses some wierd processor that no one knows anything about. Much less having programming tools or a compiler for it that doesn't cost $10,000.00 to get. Now if it was free, I might be willing to crack it open and see what;s in there. It might make for a nice serial to LCD panel display controller. But nowadays to avoid piracy and others from copying it, designers scrape off all the part numbers, break off the programming Jtag or ISP connector points, use chips bonded to the PCB directly with an epoxy glob coating for protection. So they are not likely to make it easy to hack.

IIRC this product is based on one of the Sunplus "toy databank" ICs. The core is a 6502-compatible, kinda. It's mask-ROM, and not reprogrammable, so the only thing you can actually use out of that product is the LCD. The chip is also usually sold as bare dice and mounted as a COB (i.e. bonded directly to the PCB, and covered with a blob of resin).
