Hero robot : what is hammer-like obj opposite gripper ?

Is the hexagonal hammer-like object on the opposite end of the gripper on the Hero robots just a counter weight? I've always been puzzled about that and finally thought to ask about it tonight when I saw one on eBay.

It actually houses the stepper motor that makes the arm shaft extend and retract. And does double as a counter weight.
