Increasing sonar accuracy?

Hi, is it possible to narrow the sonar "cone" by placing some sort of mask over the transducer?

Yes, but the opening must be a multiple of the wavelength. At 40KHz, the wavelength is 8.5mm, so to achieve a gain of say 5x, you need an opening or a dish of at least 45mm. I recommend you consider the dish. Experiment with a torch reflector.
