They need to change their time line back at least another 300 years further to the time of Homer. In the Illiad (just finished a good read) the author (presumably Homer) talks of Hephaestus making golden servants, and many other clever mechanical devices.
Assuming the tale is a true account of the Trojan wars, and the original idea of Hephaestus golden servants was concurrent with that time, rather than a device manufactured later by Homer, it would put the idea of robotics back to 1100 BC.
