The Garmin Rino GPS/Radio is a great unit. I have a 110 and a 120. Whatmakes them interesting for rocketry is that the units track each otherautomatically. Once contact has been established, tracking is automaticunless you disable the function. The Garmin transmits GPS data using the 70cm band at .5 watts which gives it a very long range in the air. Weight isaround 7 oz. with 3 lithium batteries. I think this can be reduced to around4 oz if the case is pulled. A 120 and 110 pair run around $400. The 120 hasfairly detailed maps. Since most launch sites are out of the way locations,a GPS hand unit is almost a must for getting around. In essence one ispaying $120 for an onboard GPS telemetry system. If the onboard 110 unit isdestroyed, one only loses $120. There is nothing currently available thatcan beat the price. Launches that deploy at apogee, can ad a M.A.D. unitwhich costs around $40 and have a system that tracks the rocket altitude andposition and deploys the chute for less than $200.

I use falcon transmitter that are small and light. But, GPS is still fun to play with.
