1/48 F117 Questions

Nov 05, 2003 2 Replies

Just getting back into building after a lengthy layoff and pulled down a Testors F117 in 1/48 as a first primarrily OOB project.

A few question for the group:

1) Many (most) pics show some level of redness to the intakes. I plan to paint the entire part black, mask off the outer edges, paint the screen area a dark red and then drybrush black across the raised detail...is my thinking correct? (Not planning on using any PE screen material at this time...)

2) The ejection seat sux...would a Black Box or Verlinden ACES II aftermarket resin seat fit instead?

3) Any other tips on assembling or painting an F117?

TIA...

I did the Monogram one and noted most of the issues you see - yes; I used a Verlinden seat and it made a HUGE improvement to the cockpit. I'd also suggest a set of aftermarket decals. Other than that, I also scratchbuilt the "flapping" portions of the glare shield from plastic sheet.

I painted mine using a can of flat black spray paint...decaled it, and oversprayed with dullcote. The result was very convincing, for using rattle-cans...you idea for painting the intakes should work - and look great.

Squadron has a "Walkaround" out for the F-117 - highly recommended reference if you don't have it already.

Enjoy.

Thanks Rufus...

I will grab the Squadron publication ASAP! You're so right, they are worth having on hand.

I did find a back issue of Finescale Modeler from 1991 with a workbench review of the Testors kit!
