With all due respect to Mr Rouch, there are a couple of slight inaccuracies in his text......
The An-71 did not have a six-metre 'greatly extended' wingspan - it was based on a production An-72 with the same wingspan of 31.89 metres.
The confusion arises because the the PROTOTYPE An-71 had a span of
25.83m. All subsequent An-72/71/74's had the 6-metre larger span. Also - it was not actually intended as a carrier-based AEW a/c - it was strictly land-based.
It was considered (after it had been designed) - but was deemed to be too heavy.
That is why the Yak-44 (E-2C Hawkeye lookalike) was designed from the start as the carrier-based option.
The An-71 is still languishing at Gostomel, Kiev, Ukraine - see the pics on my webpages at:-
