F-100D + TDU-10 Dart Target

There is a photo of a F-100D carrying the target on page 13 of Squadron Signal's Aircraft in Action No.1009. I was thinking of using the TDU-10B Tow Target System from the Hasegawa Aircraft Weapons kit No.X48-1. Not sure if they are the same, but maybe close enough? The details of the target mounting in the photo leaves a bit to be desired, and I've hit the end of my in-house references without finding any other information. If anyone can direct me to another source of photos or drawings of this combination I'd appreciate it very much.

One other question - on the same page there are two F-100Ds with an absolutely straight vertical line where the paint meets the area where the paint usually burns off on the aft section of the Super Sabres......... Is is possible that these aircraft were painted grey and the aft section was left unpainted due to the heat burning the paint off?

Thanks all. To reply direct please remove the x's found in my address - my poor attempt at stopping SPAM.

You are correct as to why, however I'm not sure of the exact time when they stopped painting this area.

***** Thanks Ken. Much apprecitate. I've since found out that they also painted some F-100's overall aluminium lacquer...... Probably looks the same and I'll have to be careful with my photo interpertation...... Anyway the caption of the aircraft I'd like to do states that it is gray, so that's good enough for me.

Would you, by any chance, know the color of the area below the leading edge wing slats if the aircraft was painted overall grey/gray? Would it be the same color as the airframe or remain in natural metal....... or possibly something else?

Thanks and cheers - Jim.

Originally, F-100s in service were natural metal, but the Air Force had problems of moisture seeping in, plus maintenance of the NMF, so they were painted in in overall silver laquer to eliminate both problems.

Regarding the caption, the plane may very well be painted in gray paint, but silver laquer weathered and flattened to a very flat grayish silver color, that can look gray from certain angles.

By any chance can you email me the picture?

My best guess is that area would be silver laquer like I mentioned above. It could possibly be gray, but odds are it was silver laquer.
