Were these airplanes painted light gray or were they natural metal? The photos and color paintings I have seen are unclear on this point

They varied from time to time and what airframe was used for conversion. Most of them were natural metal but some were OD and some used a green dot camouflage.
There are three or four good decal sheets out there in 1/48 on "Texans in Korea" so search on those.
