In German they call it an engine, specifically because nobody wants to say "Fokker Motor". (it's a joke, for the slower)

I think it's a hold-over from the Brit-speak term "motorsports" and "motorcars". It's a title, not a technical term.
I agree that a motor, in the US currently, is electric while an engine uses a fuel. Where it gets murky is *when* the term was used, and
*where* the term was used. In the US, Britishisms used to be more common than today.--- Stephen
