It would be interesting to see most of the old Revell and Adams 1/40th military and rocket kits available again. If I remember correctly the Adams stuff was reissued under different brands but not any of the big brands like Monogram. I don't remeber anyone discussing who ended up with the Adams molds - just that Revell guys worked on them. A few years ago there was a effort via email to get Revell to reissue the XSL Moon Rocket - another $500 dollar ebay seller - which went nowhere. Rumors at the time where that clear part molds were damaged or missing or that Revell hadn't cataloged the molds after moving and couldn't easily find specific sets.

Lindberg probably has them since they bought all the tooling Life-Like owned, and they reissued most of the 1/40 scale military stuff at one time or another.

Be interesting to see if they could be influenced into a new set of releases - the Honest John for one seems to command high prices and was a really good kit as I remember. The Thor with launch stand was another of my favorites.

I remember building the Talos in about 1959- one of my first kits. My dad worked at Bendix in South Bend so he got me a model of something he worked on. Damm, I wish they'd rerelease some of those! How about the Mace Teracruzer from the History Makers series?

Yeah, I read the wrong line on that. The Adams Vanguard was 1/80 and the Thor was 1/87.

SNAP was name used by Athern the train company.

Here is what Burns lists as reissues:

Crown- Hawk missile carrier, 120mm AAA, M20 A/C, Jeep & trailer

Life-Like- M20 A/C, Jeep & trailer, 105mm how, 120mm AAA, LVT, M40 GMC,

155mm gun, Atomic cannon, YH-41, Hawk carrier, Honest John, Hawk battery

Marusan- Hawk battery, 105mm how, Atomic cannon, 120mm AAA, LVT

SNAP- Honest John, Hawk battery, YH-41, Hawk carrier, M20 A/C, Jeep & trailer, M40 GMC, 105mm how, Atomic cannon, 155mm gun, 120mm AAA, LVT

UPC- Honest John, Hawk battery, M40 GMC, Atomic cannon, 155mm GMC, 120mm AAA, LVT, M20 A/C, Jeep & trailer, Soldiers, 105mm how

Y'know, 1/40 was supposed to be a "compromise" scale between the 1/48 of airplanes and the 1/32 of tanks. . .

I built that when I was stationed in Germany from 87-90. It was among the kits I gave to my gunner's kidswhen it was time to PCS. I'd like to try building that kit again. IIRC, even the History Maker's version was rather expensive way back then compared to a 1/35 Tamiya armor kit. Rob Gronovius Modern US armor at

The 1/40th was good when it started - but then Aurora started tanks in

1/48th and Monogram started about 1/32 or 1/35 not sure which and Renwal jumped in with a slightly larger scale than that - so none of them went together. Some of the stuff was from different eras - but still might have been nice to have a tiegr and sherman in the same scale.

A lot of full size manufacturers drawings (remember when they did drawings?) were done in 1/40th scale.everything that I've found from Martin in large size for the B-57 was in 1/40th scale or 1/10th scale, especially the paint shop drawings.

Revell tried 1/40th scale with their Skyraider and IIRC weren't there a few Japanese a/c kits in 1/20th?

I e-mailed back and forth with a Revell rep about re-popping a few years ago. He said there just was not a large enough market for missiles to make re-issues profitable. He then cited the LaCross and Aerobee re-pops as examples of poor sellers. I told him those two were poor choices and asked why they didn't to things like re-issue the Jupiter C and Vanguard 1/100 on the fortieth anniversary, etc. I also cited they re-released their Mercury Atlas several times over a three or four year period, especially when John Glenn went back up. They must have sold a lot to keep re-issuing that kit.

Revell's X-5 was 1/40 too. Monogram' Cessna 180 is 1/40 & IIRC, Aurora's TT-1, T-37 & A-37 were 1/40 also.

It's interesting that they cite the LaCrosse - I ordered 4 of these from a advertized re-release that never happened, and still wish I had gotten them. My plan was to use the Revell 6x6 and a set of Lacrosse missile launchers in a "what if" diorama. Troops moving down to secure the road as the lacrosses set up. I really like to do the same with a set of the Honest John Launchers - almost ala the Japanese sci-fi movies. Maybe the 1/40 scale turns people off and we should be urging Trumpeter to copy these in 1/35. Might not be a bad crusade to start.

??? I have one or two of them from the 1997 SSP. I think they can still be found at shows, at least around here. They seem to go for about $15@ on Ebay.

While we're at it, Midori had a range of 1/40th scale kits they were adding to as late as 1973. Had a Malkara missile launcher armored car (modified Humber Pig), a German SdKfz 232 six-wheeled armored car, and an SdKfz. 250/9 recon halftrack. Gerald Owens

True, but they couldn't hold a candle to the Adams/Snap/whoever military kits.
