I can't recall exactly which does which, but...
I got different results depending on whether I joined all bodies in a single join feature or joined each body in a separate feature (SW2003). Worth an experiment.
Found the part I did this with. If I picked all of the bodies in a single join feature, they remained separate.
You can create a part that is formed from joining several other parts in the context of an assembly. The resulting joined part should update dynamically when you update any of the parts used to create it.
Since you want to join without combining the bodies, I assume they are disjoint (not touching). If so, you will have a multi-body part as desired. If the two (or more) parts to be joined are touching, I don't know if you can prevent the resulting join part from becoming a single body. You should probably review all of the options under Join.
What SP did you do it in If you recall. I am on 2004 sp4.2 and it doesn't seem to work that way.
Corey.
Unfortunately, I don't remember any options to keep the joined bodies separate. On the other hand, you can always perform the join resulting in a single body and then split the body into the desired separate bodies. Hopefully, you can reference the split to existing features on the join part thereby making the split dynamic so it will update as the parts change.
They actually are touching, and I have looked at the options and none of them seem to make a difference.
Nice method. I think I am going to go a completely different route on this thing though. Thank you both for your time and effort.

Saving the assembly as a part will do what you are asking.

You see I know that that will save it out with separate bodies, but I want to be able to change the origional part files and have the multi-body part file change with them, and as of yet this method will not update. The situation has been resolved, I ended up re-drawing all the parts in a single part file as multi-body.
