Dead?

Has this group finally died? I have seen nothing for several days. Jeff

I think people are hunkering down in the cold. Snowstorms all over the place, too.

Retreat to the basement, and play with trains! ;-)

No basement.

Fortunately, the "train room" is attached to the house, with inside access. Do need to turn on a space heater, since it's supposed to be a cool and rainy day here in Phoenix (currently 46). I do like the idea of "playing with trains" though - maybe I should work on some scenery before Friday night's Op Session?

No basement. It was 45C at 10 am in my shed ( 113 F ) too hot to do anything except read emails and a book ( 1634 : the Ram Rebellion by Eric Flint ) in my airconditioned caravan.

Not dead yet. Maybe people have all be at the Big Railroad Show in Springfield this past weekend or something. :-)

It should die. Hardly ever anything useful here. I belong to about twenty model railroad groups, including five on DCC and much much more useful than anything here. Plus social networks are growing and draining many of the Google Groups which are essentially the US Wild West with no Sheriff in town. Google wants to see Google Groups die as Yahoo wants to see the Yahoo Groups die. There use to be a few garbage mouths here but they pretty much drove people away. That is common knowledge among many people. I come here maybe once a month.

If you're implying that rec.models.railroad is a Google or Yahoo group, you are mistaken. It is a Usenet group. Google allows you to access it through them, but that's actually the hard way to do it. Try a regular news server. Aioe is a free one. And I use Pan as a newsreader under Linux and FreeAgent or Gravity under Windoze. All are free.

If I misunderstood what you are implying, please accept my apologies.

10 years ago, this "group" would have 50 or more posts per day and was really interesting, friendly and worth while checking out on a daily basis.

Then it got into politics, name calling and other "crap" and hence it faded away to what it is today.

OK, I'll go on topic. Customer asked for Bachmann coaling tower, OK kit (good for bashing and detailing, actually).

I advised him to do what I do: wash the parts in dish soap first, then spray with two or three light coats of automotive primer, the use acrylic craft paints for detailing and weathering.

Comments? Tips?

Excellent advice, or "advise" as many are likely to type. :-)

Good advice. I sometimes use detergent and sometimes just wipe with alcohol if the piece doesn't have a lot of nooks and crannies.

I use artist's acrylics a lot. Liquitex seems to stay usable longer than any of the other brands I've used. And I thin the stuff with their "airbrush medium" even though I usually use a brush.

Have you ever used liquid frisket for masking? Not perfect, but I have better luck with it than with any type of tape.

Wrong.

Usenet is simply being passed by; with the younger generation favoring different sorts of online social interactions, and you see the same lack of participation in all sorts of Usenet newsgroups including the ones that seldom see discussions of politics, Etc.

Nothing lasts forever, and Usenet too will eventually fade into the scenery along with Facebook and all the other fads of the moment.

Such is life.

Usenet has one advantage - you don't need to keep logging on to different web sites.

No, sounds interesting. Eg, on DPM buildings with molded-in window frames, etc. Would an artist supply shop carry it?

Black or at least Dark primer?

I get mine at either Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Be sure to take along a

40% off coupon - the stuff is $10-$15 list for a tiny bottle.

Blick has a wide selection at better prices, but shipping might eat up the difference - not worth it if you have a coupon, and both stores put one in every ad.

Whinging because it is a bit warm but bragging because we do not get brass monkey weather like you do.

The poor buggers in North Queensland are having it a bit rough, a worse cyclone than Katrina was in USA.

Fortunately Perth is too far south to get much cyclonic weather.

I use brown primer, sometimes grey. _Light_ coats, you want just enough tooth for the wtare-based acrylic paint to adhere.

I agree. My first posting to this newsgroup was back in December of

1994, 16 plus years ago and back then this was just about the only game in town. There were several attempts between 1994 and 2000 to split the group into little pieces which were all shot down by the group's members. Then came the rise of e-groups (I think that is what it was called) which went through at least one name change before Yahoo took it over and after that came the massive explosion of various splinter groups (in hindsight maybe not that good of an idea) leading to what we have today with scenery, layout, power supply, railroad, etc. -specific groups, almost too many to monitor at once and still model something! I really miss the old days when you could come here for your one-source fix for the day.

BTW, there were politics here and flame war fights from day-one of this group. I remember them well!
