MODEL RAILROAD SYSTEM VERSION 2.1.8 RELEASED

Deepwoods Software is pleased to announce the release of version 2.1.8 of the Model Railroad System. This package includes a collection of libraries and programs designed to help the modeler with many of the more tedius aspects of his or her hobby. Included are libraries for communication with Chubb and Lenz XPressNet networks, a user-mode driver for the Rail Driver control console, a library to parse XTrkCAD layout files, as well as utilities for computing dropping resistors, camera view areas, creating railroad time tables, and a switch-list based freight car forwarder system. There are several key changes in this release:

  • Added a ManPages directory. Started creating man pages.
  • Added a hook for htlatex (part of tex4ht) to create HTML versions of the documentation, along with the PDF versions.
  • Removed support for the older version of SWIG (pre 1.3), which does not work anymore.
  • Recoded the Rail Driver daemon to be a single-threaded, event driven process.
  • Cleaned up the conditional build code in the C++ directory.
  • Revised all of the C++ API documentation and added lots of additional comments in the C++ code. Found and fixed a number of bugs in both the Freight Car Forwarder (V2) and Time Table (V2) C++ support code.
  • Revised the Tcl API documentation and completed the SNIT re-writes of the various support libraries.
  • Found and fixed a number of bugs in both the Freight Car Forwarder (V2) and Time Table (V2) Tcl/Tk code.
  • Completed both the Help and printed user documentation for both the Freight Car Forwarder (V2) and Time Table (V2) programs.
  • Started work on a Programming Guide for the C++ and Tcl libraries.

In addition to the source code archive, there is also available for download a Linux binary archive and MS-Windows binary archive. Both sets of binaries were built under CentOS 4.4. The Linux binaries are distribution neutral, due to the use of StarPack technology.
