UP Licenced Athearn MKT GP-38-2

Just saw that Athearn has some GP-38-2's painted for several roads shown to be available this summer. The MKT unit is noted as a UP licensed product and costs about $5.00 more. Looks like the fallen flags require licensing too. I wonder if all the railroads including the old short lines that were absorbed by railroads the UP took over will require licensing. Bruce

Hmmmm by that you mean former roads like the Southern Pacific and the Western Pacific, would require licensing? This has gone too far, just who does the Uncle Poop think they are anyway?

Sadly, this is old news. Athearn even tried applying the UP tax to some Rock Island equipment, until it was pointedly asserted to them that UP did not own it.

For those who care, Maytag (yeah the washer/dryer folks) owns the rights to Rock Island.

Brian, What about railroads such as the HT&C and T&NO that were merged into the SP. Does the UP require licensing on them as well or just SP items? I'm just curious. $5 or $10 extra on these things is no big deal to me as I buy so little it hardly makes a difference. Of course to those who focus on railroads that require UP licensing it could add up. Bruce.

UP claims all predecessor lines, so that CGW, and M&STL, though merged into CNW, are UP marks, even though UP has never (until recently) tried to enforce them. In fact, until recently, UP was actively eradicating all predecessor road marks.

Take a look at:

Note the phrasing "The following are some of the logos that may not be used without written approval from Union Pacific." "Some" of the logos. "Custodian for trademarks from dozens of historic railroads that comprise the modern Union Pacific."

Covers a whole lot of territory.

Actually, a small, roundish, brownish, wrinkled muscle.
