eBay - Tangye manuals

This raises an interesting question in my mind. I'm sure the spirit is one of helpfulness but might we discuss whether it is actually helpful? (unless its posted by the seller :-) I would expect that regular users of Ebay will have a range of searches set up which will find articles of interest to them however ill-described or categorised. Am I wrong? At a real auction its not usual to stand over an item and bellow: "Look lads its a ....." or to comment loudly on who is or is not bidding on what. Not round here anyway :-) Food for thought as our omnibus-passing Viking would say.... regards

I'm only an occasional browser of ebay (even less so at the moment as I keep getting "IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault" messages when using it, can anyone explain that?), so I welcome posts drawing attention to something which might be of interest.

Wholly agree with Nick ;o))
I think it is a very useful aspect of our Newsgroup that sightings of interesting things are posted here. Yes, I have searches posted, of course, but am frequently surprised by things that have been advertised under the most obscure headings that I would otherwise might/would have been missed.
Keep up the good work guys!

I'm with Roland on this one. If I see something I am interested in, I am as quiet as the grave.
If I see something I think one of the group would like, I mail him directly. I can think of one Tangye specialist who might have liked less publicity for an item at the moment.

Gentlemen, As somebody who buys camping stoves etc on EBay I like Roland and Arthur would rather things were kept quiet as there are enough idiots after what I want as it is so please SHUT UP thank you :-))

So - if I find a camping stove for sale on e-bay, I should keep quiet about it??
I think all this working is bad for you Martin. Why not retire early like me & Roland ;o)) No money - but lots of fun

If you must tell me, whisper. I look regularly and usually find what I want at nice cheap prices. As to retireing, after being made redundant four times I have little or no savings, I have 15 years left to work and the mortgage is paid in 15 years. catch 22 I think. :-))
Martin P Am I down hearted, of course I am.

I enjoy eBay. Started using heavily when I was in the US, within weeks of it opening. Have learnt a bundle of do's & dont's -- all of which I'll keep to myself, as the education cost me a lot of money!
As Roland says, in a real auction if u spot something exotic in the bottom of a box you keep very quiet until you've won it. Afraid I'm the same with eBay -- unless I have no interest but know others who will have ....
Equally, it's "no prisoners" on bids. Highest bidder wins.
Great advantage of eBay (especially at US volumes) is that there are so many sellers that you can source virtually anything. Great disadvantage is that there are so many buyers that you will rarely get a bargain!

All,
I think I will have to sit on the fence on this one. I agree with what Roland is saying in some ways, as I find it intensely annoying when I am bidding for something and then someone draws attention to it on the NG. At the same time, there have been occasions where I would have missed something had it not been drawn to my attention.
My own policy is therefore to remain quiet about anything that is on EBAY, regardless of whether I am bidding or not. The only time I will let anyone know is if I know someone who is very interested in a specific subject, then I may by private email.
At the same time, I am grateful to anyone who have pointed things out to me on the NG !
Double standards I guess you could say!

I'd still rather know than not.
I operate a notional "Got there first" stratagy with people I count as friends for stuff on e-bay and I suspect others do too.
Further, I'd back off if I knew - for instance - I was bidding against yourself for something that you were really interested in and I was only buying it to swap on, on the basis that you might reciprocate sometime ;o)), so telling me privately that your moniker is "CharcoalBrazier" etc would definately hep.
That said, circumstances alter cases and if I really wanted a "thing", all scruples might vanish out the window!

OK, did one of us get these? Hope so -- price was OK. I was only after the AA manual, so deferred to someone who needed both ....

I don't think they went to a regular poster to this group and in any case the fishing season is over :-) Sad to see that the lovely, but big and no doubt thirsty, 4 cyl Parsons marine attracted no bids at a start of 50. Its location in McCreath land may have been a contributory factor :-) ttfn Roland
