External combustion

Just heard from Stirling engine society that a ten minute short following tonight's edition of 'Wonders of the industrial world' will feature a number of these engines. ISTR BBC2 9:50 but check.

Anybody else watch it? I found it quite good, a nice vintage Rider engine and a refreshingly non patronising look at some amateur attempts to build a stirling of real use in the modern world.

Yes, I saw it - watched it twice, actually ;o))

My friend John the Pedant tells me the big one that featured strongly in the piece should have been grey, not green. He works at the Science Museum and they - naturally - have one.

A hot fog man to the teeth, he has little time for Stirling cycle engines as they are so inefficient and was at pains to point out that the Swedish submarine engine runs on hot HELIUM, not hot AIR. Clever device, though, utilising the heat generated by normal activity on board against the near freezing water outside.
