Lamport Hall

Gentlemen,

Good, nee excellent weekend at Lamport Hall, at least 100 engines and I took pics of most. Saw Philip in program but did not actually see him, I apologise if we crossed each other un-noticed. Good selection of engines on show. Nick H attended and I apologise to him cos he came back for a chat, I think but I was doing my public relations bit with a gent who had no off switch :-)) buggers these public. Will put best picks up on Wednesday as going to Railfest at York tomorrow.

'Twas indeed a good day (and I presume the weather held for Monday). Enough engines to keep me happy and enough craft stalls etc for Helen not to die of boredom, plus just a few junk stalls to sift through (I came away with an unused Aladdin 'blue flame' heater for no accountable reason!). Infact we find that the catering is the only thing which lets Lamport down a bit.

Stand out engines? Amanco Colt for rarity and Monitor pumper for aesthetic and aural satisfaction. I was also rather taken by a Stuart (N or P?) popping away contentedly, seeing my interest the chap came over and almost apologetically told me that it was his lad's engine and he would normally have brought something better. I've never really subscribed to the concept of an engine hierarchy, to my mind it is variety which makes for a good rally. I wonder how many interesting little engines get left at home in favour of yet another Amanco Hired Man or something?

The Stuart belonged to a friend of mine Julian Skinner's son who thinks its the bee's knees, as for engines you failed to mention the half dozen Blackstones's including the Lister"D" version. Monday was better than Sunday a really hot day.

Yes, apologies for my very short short list, I certainly should have given the 'Blister' a mention particularly after having commented on their rarity in another thread. As for the little Stuart, I'm glad Skinner Jr. is so chuffed with it, it's a nice engine and my point was it's a shame that this sort of thing often ends up being left at home when something 'better' albeit probably more often seen, comes along.

Very nice - and running too! I expect the owner has a good supply of gasket material :-).

Like the pictures, with CAPTIONS Martin! I take it nobody stepped on your toe then!

Thanks for pictorial reminder of a very pleasant day Martin, but why "strange" for little National, don't you like the colour?

Sadly, the water tank on the Atomic sprung a very large leak on Sunday afternoon. It was loosing 5 gallons every 15 minutes. There was nothing I could do about it on the rally field, so I packed up the toys and went home :-( The only good thing was that my shiny new Wessex trailer performed admirably, and tows far better than its predecessor.

Philip,

Next time pay me a visit, I use in large quanitities industrial silicon and have a shed load of it in my van, I actually made an o ring for my rally neigbour who had forgotten to fit one when he replaced his air filter on his Camper van I'm sure I could have bunged up your hole easily :-))

Just a strange looking engine :-))

'Spose it is a bit. But not as weird as their hopper cooled vertical (5V?) with exhaust rocker delicately poised over the steamy depths! Same rather unaesthetic flywheel design though.

bought at a mate to the tank cooled 5V I already have in the collection. They are a strange beast but run well on paraffin - the small brass pot over the fuel tap holds about a quarter pint of petrol and it is enough to get it warmed onto paraffin.

On the offchance has anyone got a Wellwin water pump to fit on the end of the base? A shame to take the engine off the base but unless I can find the right pump I will because it's just too heavy.

Very interesting, Dan. I've not seen one of those before. What sort of date would you put on it ? Thanks for putting the pics up.

I love the peculiar siting of the valve gear!

I haven't a clue about a date - I would guess at 1930's particularly with the wonderful brass Amal carb. There are certainly not many about - there have been a few in SEM, and I've just heard of one in South Africa. Does anyone have any literature or info on them?
