O/T? Battery cargers

Gentlemen, I have a number of machines with batteries on them as I suspect a number of us do. My problem is keeping them charged over the winter. I realise that lead-acid batteries require a constant voltage charger and that the cheap chargers are unregulated and can gas the cells. Does anyone know where chargers with a regulated output are available, preferably not at a horrible cost. The output doesn't have to be massive as the charge time isn't an issue. I can always fast charge with an unregulated one should that occasion occur.

How about solar cell panels John?. The trickle charge should keep up with losses.

i use the discarded wall plug type that seems to power nearly everything. they only put out 50 to 250 milliamps. that type of charging won't gas the cells but it will keep the battery up on tip-top condition. i've standardised on one type of polarised plug and socket pair. i have them on 2 cars, 5 motorcycles, a skid-steer loader and an emergency power plant. they're cheap and they work. they are usually marked as 12 vdc and when open circuit they show up to 17 volts. i've never had a failure when used this way. good luck, sammmmm

John,

As Kim has suggested I use a Solar panel to keep my caravan battery up to scratch, you can by them from Maplins at no real cost.

It's an idea I hadn't considered. The only problem is that some of my batteries are rather exposed as in a tractor or two so the solar cells would have to be out in the rain. I'm not sure how they would take to that. I suppose I could make a glazed box for them to go in. I will think about that route a little more. Thanks. I also like Sam's idea. That is also worth looking at. Thanks Martin, the caravan is actually my least problem as it has mains installed so there is a suitably stabilised charger already in there. All I do is power up the mains occasionally.

I was only describing how I get around it as trailing cables to the caravan snare milkmen and I cant afford the claims :-)) My units are water proof as well so sitting on a tractor is not a problem plus you could always put it in a plastic bag, clear mind.

Not necessarily. A little more expensive than Maplins but see
