Some more "Modern" engines are made of aluminium & in some cases stainless steel. eg a Briggs & Stratton 4hp mower engine. is etching primer a must or can I get away with using just plain old primer with a gloss coat on top? CJ

Your best bet is to etch the material so that the paint has something to cling to. Paint will just slide off of stainess or Aliminiun otherwise.
