Re: anyone know who keith1101 is on ebay?

Hiya Martyn,

I've got a fail-safe way to beat all snipers on eBay. Ready? As Peter said, submit the highest bid. Works every time. Hope that helps.

And if you want to give sniping a try yourself, try Auction Stealer. Works very well for me. Oh, one more piece of advice. Even if you snipe, to win you must have the highest bid.

I seem to remember a long drawn-out series of emails on one of the USA engines lists with one of the guys from Oz on this very subject, it didn't matter what anyone said, this guy was adamant that sniping was wrong and shouldn't be allowed by ebay!

I've just checked my most recent auctions where I bid, and out of 25 (with 1 to finish) I have got 17 of them. Some were bids that were put on well before the end as I was not around at the finish, but the vast majority of all our auctions I bid for manually.

Hi Peter,

Huh, how about that. I just went and checked all of your past auctions too. Very suspicious. In EVERY case where you won, you submitted the highest bid. To ensure that this wasn't a fluke, I went and checked all of MY past auctions. In EVERY case where I won, I had submitted the highest bid. AND in every case where I lost, someone else had placed a higher bid!! And in no case did the time when the bid was submitted matter one bit. Think we may be onto some great eBay truth here?

BTW, if the good readers of this newsgroup have any skill at ferreting out really good engine-related items on eBay, please send me your eBay ID off-list so that I can add you to my "bird dog" search list. That IS the second eBay shibboleth is it not; right after the "Woe is me, I've been sniped." one?

Most definitely!! :-))

Yes, it is strange that while I can and do occasionally look at what someone else is bidding on, I am happy to miss quite a few items by conducting my own searches and placing my own watches on the items I find. That much I still do, but the golden rule is NEVER bid before time if you can at all avoid it as anyone who knows you and your interests can just as easily pick up a lot of information without any effort at all.

They still have to outbid you though.... :-))

Arnie, you are clearly a guru, and just the sort of chap we seem to need to clarify these less than obvious matters...........

However, I must add a note of damp complaint. My keyboard is flooded through spilling a mug of tea all over it laughing. :-)

Arnie ..and I wasted half a pint of good ale on what is now a nasty sticky monitor. Funnily enough most of the one-time good UK bird-dogs seem to have learned that standing there with your tail/jaw pointed at the prey is dumb. I'll happily share my remaining ones with you on the proviso that you only use them whilst in the UK. Mind you your sense of humo(u)r is now so Anglicised that perhaps you should consider immigration :-) regards Roland

Arthur & Roly,

Sorry about causing the loss of fluids, but turnabout IS fair play. I lost a good portion of the morning coffee a few days ago reading the "Power to the People" thread. Mike Hopkins posted... "Rather than SPAMming news net, I would strongly suggest that a visit to uk.rec.taxidermy might be appropriate."

I have NEVER heard anyone told to "get stuffed" quite so elegantly.

As to the language issues, Dolly French has been diligent in instructing me in the oddities of your language and I do find it fascinating. There have been a few times (like up in the Black Country around Dudley) where the services of a translator were required, but for the most part I can communicate. I think you lot would face similar difficulties in northern Maine or the bayou country in Louisiana. 8-))

And to join a couple of related ideas (eBay, language, and things British like the .303 Enfield rifle) have a look at this Aussie's auction. Be sure to read ALL of the questions to the seller and his replies. Oh, and put the drink down first.
