can even visit it. I did note it's a grade 2 listed building though. That makes it far less attractive IMO. The sale includes the workshops and machinery though I imagine most of the good stuff has gone. Having been fortunate enough to visit Fred at home, it's an interesting place. The view normally seen on TV is from the back of the house where it's two storey facade is far more impressive. Not a place for the gardners though.

The did finally grant planning permission for that but by then Fred was dead. Listed building status can only make this sort of thing more difficult. Whether the lack of TV cameras would help or hinder is questionable as well.

Did Fred ever get the horizontal tunnel built or is there only the shaft?

Reminds me of an old colleague.. Had six wives, By the age of forty. Each got a house out of him. And no, he hadn;t inherited any money...

Lived in north manchester. Knocked through to the houses on each side to allow space for the pinball machine collection. In the loft.. Didn't ask permission from the owners on each side, but floored the loft on each side, sealed off access etc..... Last time I saw him, he'd buried a fork lift truck in his back garden, which acted as a lift into his excavations - he was trying to connect to a local mineshaft. And was having problems disposing of the spoil..

Mad as a spoon, in my humble opinion but you have to admire his staggering optimism, work ethic and attention to detail,,
