Rewley Road Station returns to Oxfordshire
The LMS Oxford station that sat on the corner of Frideswide Square and Rewl ey Road, currently standing in Buckinghamshire, is set to return to Oxfords hire as a scale model at the Abingdon Model Railway Show. The 320 square fo ot model faithfully shows the detail of this iconic station from the swing bridge over the canal to the station entrance on Botley Road.
The real station which opened in 1851 was closed to passengers in 1951and c losed to freight in 1984. It was the terminus of the Varsity Line from Oxfo rd to Cambridge via Bletchley - a railway line that was dismantled and is c urrently under construction for reopening. The station was dismantled in 19
99 to make way for the Said Business School. It was transported and erected at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre premises at Quainton Road near Ayles bury and formally opened there in 2002. Now, the derelict swing bridge is t he only visible sign remaining in Oxford. The model of the station was completed in 1976 to a 4mm/ft scale and the tr ack plan and signals are all correct for the period 1938. Trains operate to a 45 minute recorded commentary which provides information on the model an d its full size origins.
