Lenz Decoder Settings

Hi,

Has anyone here had experience with the LE0511 chip and changing variables: CV2 - Starting voltage (0-10) CV5 - Maximum speed (0-10) or a customised speed curve... CVs 67-94 (0-255)

(ranges for these CVs are in brackets)

I've changed these settings but the effects are inconsistant to say the least.

For example, default settings, set the controller to max speed, loco does a scale 300mph (ish) The default value for CV5 is 10. I change it to 5, now expecting that maximum speed will be 150mph... Loco's top speed appears to be unaffected. Suprised, I set the CV5 to 1. Loco's top speed still unaffected.

Another example, the starting voltage, I can only get reasonable results (i.e. the loco moves at the slowest speed, on the lowest speed setting, using values of CV2 of around 252 - well outside the permitted range.

I've used that decoder (and its predecessor, the LE077XF) in a number of installations. It's great for small N Scale applications, like the LifeLike SW9-1200, and the Tomix Thomas the Tank Engine.

OK, first lets look at the configuration variables (CV's) involved and what they control:

CV 2: (MinV) Minimum voltage at speed step 1 CV 5: (MaxV) Maximum voltage at top speed step CV 6: (MidV) Voltage at middle speed step

The NMRA specified defaults for these settings are: CV 2: 0 CV 5: 1 CV 6: 1

If CV 6 (MidV) is set _higher_ than CV 5 (MaxV) you can get unpredictable results. I have found through experience that if I'm not careful about making sure I'm programming in PAGED mode, I can screw these CVs up royally just by trying to programm an address into the decoder! So, the _first_ thing you should do is to go back and _read_ these CV values to see what they REALLY are, then set them back to the _default_ values.

Next thing to check is CV 29 (Configuration Data) bit 4 (value of 16). If it is on, then you aren't using these CV's at all and nothing you put in them will have any effect anyway - you're actually using the speed tables _instead_ of CVs 2-5-6.
