I plan to construct a welded aluminum box, custom fitted for a tight spot on a motorcycle, something like
What type of alloy would be best? Any suggestions on where to find the latches, hinges and extrusions needed for the lid?

5052 is a very good choice for this. Corrosion resistant, easy to form and weld. It is likely what they are using as well.
