Yes, Zone Alarm is usually adequate for those folks on Dial-up, but a hardware Router is much better protection (HIGHLY recommended for those on a high-speed connection).

I'm sorry, I'm strictly speaking software. My bad for not being specific. Rod...

Whether I use a cutting torch or a plasma cutter or a gouging electrode, I burn right through either type. Plain old burning rubbish will cut right though them, even, which is why they don't belong anywhere near a welding newsgroup. Firebrick is a bit more effective. Larry, don't feed the spamming troll. Help me connect one lead to it's head, and we'll see what 300 amps up the other end does for it. Fried spam sandwiches in 10 seconds, folks.

Zone-Alarm or Tiny Personal Firewall (TPF) both get good reviews, I use ZA, and am very happy with it.

Rod: Hi Barry. I use Zone Alarm also. It's free for their basic model. I heard that "OutPost" was better though.

Rod: Hi MKloepster. I use Zone Alarm now. Their basic model is free also. I started this thread because many here don't understand the importance of firewall software.

IMO everyone needs: - Hardware firewall (if DSL / Cable or faster) - Software firewall - Up to date virus package

I use a Linksys hub/router, ZoneAlarm (free edition) and Norton AntiVirus.

Thanks for the good advice.

And to test your firewall, go to

and click on "Probe my ports". This will tell what ports you have open for the hacker kiddies to get into. By default, Windows leaves a bunch wide open. Good stuff.

Yes and spyware hunting software like ad-aware. It turns out that virus checkers don't consider back door Trojans disguised as advertisements a problem. I like the

< to ng> Their support sucked majorly when I needed it a year ago. I use Sygate (free) and Kerio. I don't know if Kerio is available free or as a demo.

Sygate is quite easy to set up, relatively speaking. I found Kerio sorta easy as well. It get's slightly deeper into the workings of posrts and things in Windows, by default.

My problems with ZA, I believe, had to do with it *phoning home*. IMHO it *was* coded to sneak out a packet to ZA *and* that packet(s) hung up on the software (ZA's) itself. But that is only my opinion. Their support on the matter was absolutely zero. I own ZA Pro, but probably will never use it.
