wire feeders for tig

related to the 'coke can' post. am considering putting together a small slipshod pencil style wire feeder to use up some 1mm aluminum mig wire i have laying around.

i have a small selection of DC motors (from printers etc) and am thinking about turning two small drive wheels out of rubber.. just squeezing/pulling the wire through.

does it make any real difference what material i make the pencil/holder out of? it wouldn't be carrying any current of course. i imagine mild steel should be able to hold up to the heat. dont think i'd be in that close with the pencil. 1mm is relatively stiff and hopefully will stay straight with a 1" or 1.5" stickout.

wondering if anyone has made their own... if they're useful, etc.

thanks again,

-tony
