E-flight, batteries, where will it end?

Sure, any 12v car battery. Problem is that its cold as hell outside, and popping the hood everytime i wanna charge something is annoying. I prefer AC, even though it makes the charger a bit more expensive.

Yeah, but a proper power supply tends to be expensive. Ive heard of guys modifying old computer PS to work, i might try that if necessary.

Thanks for the Link!, That looks easier than i thought. I have a junk AT computer too.....

If you are technically challenged by the modification of a PC power supply there is a relatively inexpensive alternative.

Here are three on line sources at good prices. You don't need anything over

8 amps. I have found 5A quite adequate for most bench tasks.

Hi Al !

Flew today.. (gota love electric, longest part of preparation is the range check)

Placed it on ONLY 1 in of snow (grass was showing through) turned it on, - GONE!

Hadda blast for 10 min or so...

So I got my "fix" :)

Maybe 10 cm expecded tonight...

So, how you find/like the Li-polys? (gotta keep this on topic) :)

Lookin at the TP paks, can save 7 oz on my Cloud Dancer and fly for 30 min+...

Would still like to get 40 - 45 A out of them though for a couple of "blats" during the flight... :)

Cheers!

Dave

we flew here today as well. Wonderful day. bright sunshine.. NO WIND!

+5 and quite comfortable. Quite unexpected after the last two weeks.

we fly at the end of the lane at the local school yard, a school bus turnaround. Gets a bit dicey in the wind as it's really a fishbowl surrounded by hills and trees on all sides. but on a day like today you don't mind running through a little slush to get airborbe

later in the afternoon we went to a ball field near my son's house and flew off a small bare patch of dirt on the road there.

Test flew two new planes, my new twin design and another little aerobat. posted some pictures on our club web page at

it was a very satisfying day!

yes, looks like trouble tomorrow.

actually I don't have any. They look pretty inviting though. still using nicads and HECELLS at the moment. we'll probably take a small plunge into lithium before the summer's over. need a charger for them though. I expect when the time comes I'll get the new astroflight lithium specific one. Cheaper than the Triton and we already have several excellent nicad/nimh chargers.

Do what I do. Get an old car battery that bno longer starts the car, but holds enough charge to run your chargers, and hook up a battery charger to it.

Great! Glad to hear some people are enjoying themselves yet. Here, it's bitter cold, only good for indoor flying.

From the photo of your new twin motored flyer, with a little modification it may be converted into a sea plane. Perhaps put a hull under the fuse, and raise the motor pods a tad.

I decided to buy 2 packs of Li Po batteries (My original posted question), I wonder if water would be kind to Li Poly batteries or ESPs?

I have seen electric float planes take off and land on water, but what if they're dunked?

Anyone with experience on these questions?

I meant ESC (Electronic Speed Controllers) Lapse of memory? Sorry.

Water is very unkind to all electronics.

Use condoms to protect receiver and silicone sealer to seal holes into e.g. servos.

Batteries should be well sleeved etc, but the motor and ESC are a problem. They need cooling. A little fresh water normally can be dried to restore electronics, but salt water is a killer. Yu MUST wash salt water damaged kit in fresh water, and leave several days to dry out in a warm place. Mostly it survives. Sometmes it doesn't.

With float planes spray strakes on teh floatsare often necessary to deflect water away from the fuselage and motor(s) Sealed boxes are needed to contain electrinics. Even so, its a bit of a specialist game.

Never thought about condoms that way, but if it works.....What would happen if I enclosed my batteries with a condom? Do Li Poly batteries get as hot as NiMHs when being discharged?

In fresh water, I have dunked receivers in gas powered seaplanes and just took off the casing to let them dry in the sun. Works, but ESCs are different, aren't they?

Remember, with electrics, you just turn them on and let them go. It's worth the troubles to have the problems solved, doesn't it?

Thanks for your input, Wan
