I have caught the bug and want to get a RC helicopter and learn to fly it. I have never flown a RC helicopter or plane, just lots of cars. Are the sub $250.00 kits on ebay worth getting to learn on? Is there a different source of beginner equipment and instruction? Thanks for any help!

I'm no chopper guru, but I get the impression that the most valuable starting point is a simulator on your PC. Even the free FMS simulator will give you a sense of what chopper flying is all about, and whether you like the idea. Most beginner chopper flyers I've spoken to have spent an insane amount of time on their simulator before starting on the real thing.
Try:
I second the recommendation to get a sim. Then get a 40-size glow heli; don't go for the fixed-pitch machines. An assembled machine like the Raptor would be a good choice until you have an appreciation of heli set-up needs. Then get a good instructor to buddy-box you, or sell everything and go fly planks.

If I did it all over again I'd get a Raptor 50 with an OS 50, JR or Futaba 8 channel radio, Futaba 401 gyro.
The Raptor 30 is also great value but the 50 will take you farther.
Stick with OS engines, and Futaba gyro's...period!
Don't fall into the trap of buying a 6 channel radio because it's cheaper. They're useless once you master the hover.
Any decent servo is fine in these machines.
