More old Top-Flite P-40 questions. My kit comes with a long piece of cotton tape that the plans say is supposed to be affixed to the top joint of the wing, where the two halves meet. What the plans do not say is exactly what is supposed to be used to make it stick. As I have mentioned in previous posts, I'm without the manual. Epoxy? Dope? Anyone know?
Placing the tape on the top of the wing isn't much use unless you plan on doing a lot of high negative G maneuvers. A much better (and stronger) approach is to use two layers of 1oz glass cloth on the top and bottom of the wing. Make the first layer about 3" wide and the second one about 6" wide. Use a finishing resin (Z-Poxy) or water based polyurethane varnish to attach the cloth. A light misting of 3M 77 spray adhesive will hold the cloth in place until you apply the adhesive.
The reason for using finishing resin is because it is meant to be sanded and doesn't contain any gummy stuff to clog the sandpaper.
The reason for using two thin layers of cloth overlapped is it leaves very thin edges to fill and sand smooth and is usually stronger than the narrow piece of thick cloth.
One of the best ways to get the cloth on straight is to get some craft paper (or old paper bags) and lightly mist the spray onto the paper. Then lay the cloth over the paper and press it down. Then cut out the pieces the size and shape you want. Next, spray a slightly heavier amount of spray adhesive onto the wing and lay the paper , cloth side down, onto it and rub it down. If you did it right, the dloth will now stick to the wing instead of the paper. When you do it this way, you can apply both layers of the cloth and then apply the sealer.
Thinned epoxy will work. Z Poxy is good too. Medium CA spread with a plastic parts bag will work too but you better have a good fan and ventilation cos the fumes will be bodacious.
Boy, AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH! Tried that ONE time and moved on to cheaper, slower, and less aggressive adhesives. Some days I use epoxy, others Z-poxy, and others wood glue. Depends on my attitude at the time.
