Tips for setup for 3D with aeroplane

servo choice. I'm flying a funfly model made from a plan called an XS with a OS 46 AX in it , what would be the best prop for prop-hanging?

You will need to experiment to find the best prop, but a good starting point would be a 12x3.5 or 12x4 preferably in a wide blade.

If it has not already been mentioned:

Keep the push rods as short as possible.

Make sure the control surfaces are free moving.

MOST 3D type planes need 45 degrees of movement (or more) on the control surfaces.

The aileron surface should be AT LEAST 25% of the wing area, 30% - 35% is better.

Make sure your engine is reliable for prolonged running in a vertical position.

Practice your maneuvers "3 mistakes high".

I know most of this is "common sense", but sometimes common sense "gets lost" along the way :)

APC 12.25x3.75 for 3D and hovering on that engine.

Try looking at September 2004 issue of Model Airplane News page 92 "3D Aerobatic Setup" by Quique Somenzini. Very good advice for 3D setup.

Hi Clifford.. I'm a total newbie to RC planes, in fact I have not got one yet. I'm seriously thing about getting myself a trainer etc in the very near future. ie. join a club etc. (Need a hobby in my retirement) Forgive my ignorance, I've seen references to 3D models, but can you tell me what 3D means with regard to models. The obvious thing that comes to mind is 3 dimensional of course but ar'nt they all.

Mike 3D is aerobatics that involve things that a "normal" model can't do, like hanging on the prop and other maneuvers done where the prop, not the wings, is holding the plane up.
