Nice motor. Good power, really light weight, friendly handling. The only nit for me is the goofy muffler/pipe arrangement Saito is using this time around. Seems Saito changes muffler/pipe design every year.

OS 120 Surpass w/pump = vertical flight till you're scared you wont be able to see it anymore!

Which one of at least 5 Super Skybolt kits are you referring to? The best of the bunch, a 25 year old Cass kit flew well on a ST.61 Blue Head and a 13 X 5 prop. To answer your query, we need to know size, span, weight, recommended engine size range your model? is designed for. Useless overpowering any model beyond the design parameters unless you want a model that fall apart in mid air. regards Alan T.

Hey Doc, at least you got a few replies this time.

I'm building a GP SB and have a MVVS 90 waiting to go in it. I have no clue about the Saito. IF you haven't bought the kit yet I hear tell that the Carol Goldberg SB is lighter than the one I'm building. There is lots if balsa in my kit. Unlimited Vert. is overkill IMHO but I love power. I also hear a 60 2CY is NOT going to pull this plane but your 4 stroke should much more torque. mk

Hi,

I have the Great Planes Super Skybolt. It is a great kit and looks and flies great too! I don't have any experience with the Saito 1.00, but wanted to write and say I am running with a GMS .76 2cy with a 12x6 prop, and it seems to pull it around just fine. My total weight comes in at a whopping 10lbs 3 ozs. A large portion of this is due to the weight of the GMS engine and the J'tec pitts muffler which total 2lbs 1 oz alone. I have the battery located directly under the fuel tank, and moved the servo tray forward about 2.5 inches from the stock location. I still needed 3oz of lead in the cowl to get the CG right. So please note it does build tail heavy. The I run from a grass field, and have no trouble taking off with this set up. I usually zip around at about 2/3rd throttle. My biggest problem is landings. At this weight it has a very quick sink rate and comes in rather hot. I've only had the chance to fly it eight times last season, and out of the eight landings I've only nailed two. The others have been bounced, nosed over, or stalled and dropped. I'm still very new to the hobby (3rd season), and this is only my 3rd kit, so most of the landing problem is probably my lack of skill. I think you will be very happy with this kit and I suspect the Saito 1.00 would make a great combo. I have pics of my whole construction on my website if your interested.

I'm new at this too. Wouldn't it be possible to configure your plane for flaperons and soften the hot landings somewhat?

Hi Mark,

Fun hobby isn't it? Yes, I think next season I will have to try a bit of flaps. I'm always willing to try and experiment a little. Part of the problem with biplanes I think is that they have a lot of drag due to the extra wing, interplane struts, etc. With that much surface trying to cut through the air you really need to keep some power on or risk a stall. My radio does allow me to setup flaperons. Maybe a bit of down flaps will slow me up a bit, yet still provide some lift on the glide in. I'll have to give it a shot this spring when I get back out to the field.

The simple fact is that when it comes to bipes, the GP "SkyBolt" is a "tank", nice kit taht it is... I don't believe I've ever seen one that came in at less than 10# and flaps or no, you will have to keep the steam on this plane when landing, or it's gonna drop outta the sky..

Want a bipe that "floats" on landing? Get a Sig Hog-Bipe (SOOPER plane), a Balsa USA Phaeton 90, or anything designed by Chuck Cunningham, or build a GB Ultimate to come in at 7 1/2# with a YS.91FS...

Mike Cross ("Mr. AMC") used to build and sell them, and they'd fly 3D maneuvers......

Cheers,

Bill
