Any Wireless Gurus Here?

I'm setting up a new wireless network at home and I'd like to find a site that provides help that does not read like a Fanuc manual.

Yes, I've been corresponding with the help desk of the equipment maker, but it seems to take them about 48 hours to get back.

I need a simple list of do's and don'ts and easy to follow troubleshooting steps.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Linksys router and it was simple, was no troubleshooting.

Plugged it in typed winipcfg, (ipconfig) for XP) click release all, renew all, and bingo it worked.

You want to set wep for security after you get it working.

If you go to your browser type 192.168.1.1 This should display your setting for the router.

good luck

Thanks Dave. Lots of good stuff there.

I got the basic connection going, but when I change it to secure encrypted, I can't get a connection. I'm trying different combinations of channel and encryption now. There seems to be a lot of competition for bandwidth as I'm seeing fifteen wireless networks available when I try to connect.

I think wpa is more secure.

Fred, I would suggest dropping the 192.168.* domain for the other local defined domain of 172.10.* if there are a lot of other networks in the area.

Make sure you have a ssid (name) and it matches on both, or all computers.

Then set the wep, or wpa on bothe systems and make sure they match.

You can only connect to your "SSID" and nobody will be able to connect to your ssid.

Sounds like your on your way.....good luck

Also pick a different channel than the default which is usually 1.

If you are running XP there is a wizard for setting up wireless networks that works well enough. You need a memory card or a memory stick and the wizard will put the settings on the card, then you simply plug the card into all of the computers you are adding to the network.

I had a problem when I first switched to cable. I banged my head for a couple of hours and no matter what I did I couldn't get the wireless gateway to work. Finally I plugged a network cable into the gateway (bypassing the wireless) and found that the idiots at the cable company turned off the connection right after the installer left.

Thanks for the tip Dan. I'll put the settings on a SD card.

It is. Its also a bit more complicated.

On the other hand..I run an open system at home, with a firewall. Who the hell is going to go to the effort to hack my home system? The best they can do is acess my download/ebooks/machine directory, which I keep open for visitors who want to collect books, freeware and machine tool manuals and pictures.

If I were someone of note or a financial or professional institution with lots of secure data..hell yes.

And Im on dialup..so if someone wants to piggyback net acess..and can deal with the slow speed, go for it.

Thanks Dave. I finally got it. The alphanumeric key for WEP had to be typed in all caps.

A little confusing because a balloon pops up, warning that the caps lock is on. Well, disregard that...

Pretty much what I figure. Though I always make it a point to never hog resources on those systems. Most folks dont realize that anyone has been sharing their broad band connection for a few minutes.

OK, now I need help. Trying to setup a BEFW11S4 router. Wired has 4 ports & wireless, only using the wired ports to connect my DSL & a laptop. My computer is connected to the internet DSL PPPoE. (So swbell says) but the router only works with "obtain an ip automatically" I can get each to connect only one at a time, if one is connected the other will not connect. Log off one & the other will connect.

Both are running XP, I can't find where to set different addresses for each.

Type slow as I ain't to smart (own a machine shop) that proves it !!
