3 phase calculations

What is the best book, software, or source for gaining a good understanding of 3 phase calculations as applied to 3 and 4 wire wye connected alternators and loads, unbalanced loads, instantaneous power and metering methods? A good dose of laymans terms to help shoe horn me in to a higher conceptual understanding and ability to handle calculations knowlegably (like Yunus Cengel's 'Thermoedynamics'). thanks, chuck

understanding

A good circuits text will provide the basics of 3 phase- balanced systems and also power measurements. Johnson, Johnson and Hilbert -Basic Electric Circuits has this material and a quick reference may be a Schaum's Outline on Electric Circuits. For unbalanced systems find any book on power system analysis which will cover symmetrical components. . Some of the older books (Stevenson, Kimbark, etc) do give a good review of basic 3 phase analysis and also develop the use of sequence components for unbalanced systems and may be a bit more readable than some of the newer texts which are lean to matrix methods.

It wouldn't hurt to understand eigenvalues and eigenvectors for matrices. These concepts are also another form of normal coordinates.
