Interuptor Differencial?

Would somebody be kind enough to translate from Spanish, what a "Interuptor Differencial Bipolar" might be please. I am re-wiring an old house in Spain, and I am adding an Earth to all the sockets etc in the house. I assumed this IDP was some sort of earth leakage detector, but when I wire it into the supply, it will not "set". It says it is a



40A device, with a 30Ma sense. Has 2 poles in and out and no earth connection, any positive help for this layman would be appreciated, especially a brief explanation of the "principle of operation", thanking you in advance.

Can't help with the Spanish but the operation of an RCD is easy enough.

Basically there is a toroidal core which has a few turns each of the live and neutral conductors. It also has another winding with lot of turns which drives a solenoid to release the switch.

When all is well, the field from the line and neutral balance and the other winding sees no net field. When the live and neutral current differ, there is a net field and a current induced in the other winding, which energises the solenoid.

There is a 'test' circuit- which links a resistor across the live i/p to the neural o/p via a push switch. When this is press you induce and imbalance and the RCD should release.

Your description SOUNDS like an RCD but do check.
