Motor runs backward

A friend of mine has a salvaged band saw, small hobby type. The motor occasionally start backward. Any idea on what type of motor would have been chosen for such application? Is it running backward "natural" for some types of motors or is always an indication that something is amiss?

Thanks

You do not say, but in all likelihood this uses a single phase induction motor. Such motors are not likely to start by themselves especially under load. There usually is a capacitor used for starting although other methods are possible. Once started, however, the motor will continue to rotate in the same direction as initially. This makes me think that you probably have a bad capacitor or switch or something like that. Why it should sometimes start in a different direction is a little strange,
