Need some suggestions - AB related

We have a small automation machine we are rebuilding. We have an AB SLC504 equiped cabinet that came off another piece of equipment that was never used, that we are going to adapt for control of the machine. (Yes, one of those 'You have to do this, we MUST have this piece of equipment, but we didn't budget for it' type of things, so cost is an issue). This machine, although it would be nice, really doesn't need a servo control. It needs only one motor, but it indexes, and thus needs some type of positioning, speed control and controllable accel/decel. Since the positioning need not be to the micron level, what stepper control/motors, in the vast experience of the group, work best and integrates well with the AB? Stepper drives are not something we typically deal with in our facility,

99.7% of everything is servo control. As such, we are unfamiliar with what is available in the marketplace.

depends on a lot of things. in most cases it is not especially cost effective to use stepper motors unless the required HP use is quite low.

there are plenty of small stepper motor manufacturers out there. AB even makes a stepper module for the slc that fits in the rack.

The load is quite low, it pulls 4 timing belts, over 4 needle bearing supported pulleys each, two of the belts run on teflon strips and carry the load, which is less than 1 kg total. Measuring with a torque wrench, it takes less than 10 lbin to turn the drive pulley with load applied (torque wrench didn't go low enough for an accurate measurement). The machine previously had a stepper drive, but the control cabinet that came with the machine years ago has been severely robbed, and the motor is gone too. This thing has been sitting in the 'worn out machines' warehouse for quite some time.
