Finally got around to printing a Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch for my brother-in-law, big Monty Python fan. The main body came out decent in gold silk PLA, but all the little beaded detailing along the seams looks like it melted together. Basically a raised blob line instead of individual beads. I'm printing at 0.12mm layers on a fairly standard FDM machine, and I slowed the outer walls down thinking that would help. It didn't really. My guess is the beads are just too small for my 0.4mm nozzle to resolve, but I'm not sure if a smaller nozzle would actually fix it or just give me a new set of problems with the silk material, since I've heard the silk additives can make fine details stringy.
Should I reprint just the beaded sections in resin and glue them on? Or is there a slicer trick I'm missing, like minimum feature size settings? The cross on top has the same issue with the tiny colorful accents, so whatever fix I find needs to work there too. Not trying to win a contest here, just want it to look like the movie prop and not like it got dropped.
