Wrap-Around Desert Night Scene Engraved on a Tumbler

Coated drinkware is one of the trickier blanks for laser work, since the design only appears if you cut through the finish cleanly. The maker engraved a wrap-around desert night scene onto an insulated metal tumbler, removing the dark blue-grey coating to reveal the lighter metal underneath. The contrast that approach gives is lovely, and it suits the subject matter well.

The setup behind this one is interesting. The maker recently bought a Wecreat Vista and has been playing around with the rotary on old tumblers that were already lying around the home, which seems like a sensible way to learn a new machine on cheap stock. The artwork itself was made with Gemini: the maker described the scene wanted and had it scale the image to fit the bottle. Once the engraving was done, the tumbler got a wash with a sponge, soap, and water, and the engraved details survived that cleaning.

What stands out to me is the scope of the artwork. It packs in saguaro and prickly pear cacti, ocotillo, mesas, a coyote silhouette, and a starry sky, all forming one continuous panorama that wraps fully around the bottle. Pulling off a seamless wrap with that much small-scale work is a strong result in my view. The bottle shown also has a threaded stainless steel lip with a yellow silicone gasket and no lid.

The maker is still weighing whether the level of detail is too much or still fine, and has acknowledged the work has room for cleanup. The maker also noted the fine details have held up well so far, though daily use could change that.

This turned out really nicely. I would like to know how the artwork came together, since keeping a coyote silhouette and that many different plant shapes consistent across a full wrap is not easy. Was the scene drawn from scratch, or was some other method used to build the image before it went on the bottle?

The maker has said the image was made with Gemini. The maker described the scene that was wanted and had Gemini scale the image to fit the bottle, then ran the engraving on the Wecreat Vista. So the artwork was generated rather than drawn by hand, going by what the maker has shared so far.
