Asylum Locks

Hi All,

Just wondering, what type of locks are used in mental hospitals?

Gee,t hat's a crazy question.

Anyhow, I can speak only from having visited a couple, and done some work on one. I'm in NY State. They use really old Corbin on some doors, old mortise locks. some areas, they use an old lever lock with a skeleton like key, three levers. And some areas, they use Best cores, to operate mortise locks.

The job I got was replacing a bunch of mortise locks on an installation, the operating keys were Best.

This would depend on the kind of patients they served. the light duty cases there is nothing special. For others they use delayed egress locks allowing exit only after the alarm sounds for 15 seconds. This is common in Alzheimer's treatment facilities. For the real bad cases they have key access on all sides of all doors.

The local state hospital uses Best I/C.I believe they changed to Best in about 1985-before that it was the older Corbin 6-pin.
