I just passed a store and as I was looking through the door and I noticed that the keys are still in the modeco lock. The lock that is inside the store. Is this safe or should I call the police? I assume that the pins are clear of the shear line so it would just be a matter of using a screwdriver to turn the lock from the outside.
This could apply to Zeiss Ikon cruciform locks. These are pin tumbler locks with a cross shaped keyway with pin tumblers on three of the legs (I think) with the cylinder (AFAIK) contained within the lock case. The key can enter the plug from either side with the cuts in a symmetrical manner. If the key is left inserted from the inside, the plug could be rotated from the outside with a screwdriver or perhaps a more specialised tool.
But not for virtually any other type of pin tumbler lock.
Was the store closed? Was it in the afternoon? Why did you take the time to talk to Us about this issue?! In this day and age, when you feel a concern like what you described, I suggest you see if the door is open first. If not, pound on the glass a bit to see if someone might be there. If someone responds, point out the error. If nobody answers, report it to the police emmediately. By your observations, you seem to be an accute observer, dont be a part of a potential problem or worse. Report it, It's a great thing to let the athorities figure out whats up.. Thats what they do. People who notice locks, just notice the locks, a key in the lock isn't a lock at all, and what good is that?... Of course, you already knew this.
Most store fronts, the inner and outer cylinders are separate devices. And, it's all but impossible to turn the inside one from the outside. Key, or not.
