My Dad used to rave about gaffers tape. But I'm not sure where to get it.

Home Gaff-ot?

Gaffer's Tape is available from theatrical supply houses... Look in your local phone book under :"Theatrical Equipment and Supplies" Every larger city should have at least one place that sells things like this...

I know of several in the Boston area personally...

Drama/video/audio supply houses.

you can get gaffers tape at any theatreatical supply store. one is Barbizon, another is Rosebrand, and many others

Get some of that no-slip stuff that looks like rubberized netting and glue a few pieces on. It'll keep things from sliding around if you're working on a slick or tilted surface.

It's also quite useful for gripping just about anything slick.

Masking tape is also somewhat easier to mark, IME. I tend to stick with blue for most projects, and for a quick template, I've had good luck with the sticky sheets from lint rollers.
