I am wondering about choices of skin materials... other than unobtainium of course.

Plastic bags are coated with a thin film of "glass", to keep oxygen from getting to bagged lettuce. But a thin coat won't do much for blocking UV, or healing the structural damage induced in the skin.
Rubrene appears to be a choice (in a composite anyway), that could be used to turn the upper surface into a power generating station. I doubt it would last very long as ozone levels rise.
Maybe high density polyethylene, with a bit of glass on the outside. Keep it simple.
