Hydrogen embrittlement is a cause of failure when Rockwell hardness of Rc30 is exceeded. Steels with UTS greater than 240 ksi are often of higher hardness.
Electroplating is a source of hydrogen. Baking may be employed to reduce the tendency for hydrogen embrittlement.
