Specifying Metals

Dec 02, 2003 2 Replies

What attributes do engineers need to spec out metals? Is dimensional info like width, thickness and tensile and yield strength needed?

When would an engineer go to a specialty mill or a service center?

What would be the top attributes to use to find a certain metal?

Hi, you may usefully consult the ASM Handbook Volume 20 Materials Selection and Design, by ASM International, at

Oh, the normal things like color and length

No, only geeks are interested in those things.

Either on Ladies Night or Free Beer Night. Otherwise, they stay away.

Besides the color and length, mentioned above, the types of freebies the sales reps hand out and the chest size of secretary in the local sales office.
