What is one of these puppies worth, barely used. It is the pedestal type. The guy said he paid $500 for it.

Need more info. Their smallest 1/2" DP sells for $39.99, the largest is around $550.

Get the model number and look it up online! There's a bunch of different models and all have pedestals. Floor model or bench model is the differentiation, the bigger and better ones have Morse taper spindles instead of directly mounted chucks. As to what it's worth now, it depends on the condition it was in when it was new. Some of them are only fit for the trash bin right out of the box. You'll have to do like you'd do with any used equipment purchase, check the bearings, chuck runout, pulley runout, motor bearings, etc. They've been known to have loads of core sand left inside the castings that make short work of any bearings installed. $500 sounds like a lot for a plain-jane 1/2" Chinese drill press, but maybe HF caught another sucker on a full-price day.

The most it could possibly be worth is less than the lowest sale price that HF regularly offers it for. The 20-inch "production" floor models often go on sale for about $330, though they list at $460-$530.
