read the newsgroups on their site, pov.binaries.images should give an idea of what it's capable of. Not easy to learn, math much involved. Free, GNU, free is good.

thanks for your help. what exactly is free "GNU"?

"GNU's not Unix". An on-going project of the Free Software Foundation to create a complete, freely distributable, POSIX-compliant computing environment.

Open software, the source code is available to anyone that thinks they can improve on the program. POV-Ray has several variants, Mega-POV, mlPOV, SIM-POV, all specialized for different areas. The original, from the url, is the only official version, and is continuously updated, but not as often as some others. IF you can think in an "x-y-z" frame of reference, it makes it a little easier, but the "help" will be needed. It's not the easiest thing to learn, but well worth it when you do.

Unless something has changed drastically with Solid Works within the past

4-5 years, you have one of the best.
